The Cassandra Summit 2014 took place on September 10-12 in San Francisco with more than 2000 attendants. The summit was split into 3 days, with Training sessions on the first and third day and Conference sessions with 6 tracks on the second one. The first thing we noticed after passing through the registration desk was how amazing the organization was.
When Stratio met Spark: A true love story
Certified distribution
Stratio is delighted to announce that it is officially a Certified Spark Distribution. The certification is very important for us because we deeply believe that the certification program provides many benefits to the Spark community: It facilitates collaboration and integration, offers broad evolution and support for the rich Spark ecosystem, simplifies the adoption of critical security updates, and allows the development of applications valid for any certified distribution – a key ingredient for a successful ecosystem.
Stratio sponsors Big Data Spain 2014
Stratio is one of the proud Platinum Sponsors of the 3rd edition of Big Data Spain, one of the largest conferences of Big Data in Europe.
Stratio at the Spark Summit 2014
The Spark Summit 2014 took place earlier this month in San Francisco, and Stratio was there! More than 1.000 attendees have had the opportunity to find out what the news is in the most active open source project in the Hadoop ecosystem, and they were quite a few!
First Apache Spark meetup
Stratio kicked off its first Apache Spark meetups earlier this month. Our friends and members of other groups on meetup joined in when we announced the group in Madrid.
Only 2 weeks later we celebrated our first Spark meetup. The expectation was unusually high. We counted 101 members on the group, 50 RVSP’d, and 8 members on the waiting list. This surprised us because Spark only recently became an Apache project and it is yet to be widely known in the mainstream enterprise in the US, never mind in Europe.

Paper of the week: “BlinkDB: Queries with Bounded Errors and Bounded Response Times on Very Large Data” [1]
This paper has been presented at the Eurosys 2013 conference and is avaiblable for download at the conference website. The paper presents BlinkDB that, despite its name, is not a database but a query engine on top of Hive and Shark, and it is used for running interactive SQL queries on large volumes of data using data samples.
Introduction to CQL3 & A systems approach to the data life cycle
Our second Meetup of the Madrid Cassandra Users group took place on February 12th at Paradigma Tecnológico. The meetup consisted in two talks of 20 minutes each:
Talk 1: Introduction to CQL3
Cassandra Query Language (CQL) is a SQL (Structured Query Language)-like language for querying Cassandra.
Speaker: Jose Hernández, Owner at Isthari.
Our talk about Stratio Deep on NoSQL matters in Cologne 2014
We are happy to announce that our talk “Stratio Deep: an integration layer between Cassandra and Spark” has been selected for the NoSQL matters conference.
A formidable 2013 year of a Big Data start-up
The first 12 months of a BigData venture
We will remember 2013 as the year when Stratio was born. The brainchild of Oscar Méndez, Nacho Cabrera, Julio Casal and a few others, Stratio was only a number of disconnected ideas just 12 months ago. Some of the best ones were discussed, sometimes quite passionately, at a number of weekly web conferences between Madrid and Palo Alto in the early months of the year.
